Background info:
Stephen McGarvey is the Director of the International Health Institute and Professor of Community Health at the Brown School of Medicine. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the NIH supported AIDS International Training & Research Program at Brown. McGarvey earned a B.A. in Sociology from Villanova University, a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Pennsylvania State University in 1980, and an M.P.H. in Epidemiology from Yale University.
Research interests:
Human population biology and international health, specifically modernization-induced biobehavioral changes, tropical medicine, and environmental health.
Current research:
McGarvey is a biological anthropologist and is currently the principal investigator on two NIH grants and co-investigator on two other NIH grants. He directs a long term study in Samoa and American Samoa of the impact of modernization on human biology and health. His current study attempts to understand environmental and genetic interactions that increase cardiovascular disease risk factors such as obesity, diabetes and hypertension. He also directs a study of schistosomiasis transmission in Samar, The Philippines which focuses on the development of a dynamic mathematical model using animal and human infection data, and key environmental factors, such as irrigation and rice farming. He collaborates with Michael White on a study of population, environment and health in the Cape Coast region of Ghana. He collaborates with others on a study of the development of immunity to schistosomiasis among adolescents in Leyte, Philippines.
Pending Research:
McGarvey has two pending applications to conduct applied public health research on obesoity and diabetes in American Samoa. These involve collaborations with behavioral scientists in other department at Brown University.
